Let’s Occupy Congress!

John Boehner & Mitch McConnell

I watched the television program 60 Minutes last Sunday, November 13, 2011 and the expose they did called Insiders definitely raised my blood pressure. It confirmed what I’ve been saying for years i.e. the politicians in “our” Congress (senators & congressmen) write the laws but they don’t apply to them. This story exposed in clear, simple to understand, black & white what these lying bastards have been pulling on us for years, hell,  for decades. Of course it’s common knowledge that all politicians are liars & crooks but this story stood out because it laid bare one of the key ways they get so god-damn rich. So the next time you happen to get the chance to talk to a politician, face to face, and they tell you that they are there to represent & protect your interests, spit in their face & denounce them for the bald-faced liar that they are.

I have been following political matters both domestic & international for over 30 years and thought that the corruption was mostly covert or behind the scenes but this story revealed that these corporate cockroaches posing as politicians, are pretty much committing their crimes against us right out in the open. Is it any wonder that America is going down the toilet with the morally bankrupt people pretending to work for us in Washington D.C.? Just when I think that they can’t possibly do anything new that could surprise me, I am proved wrong once again. It’s like they’re laughing in our faces and saying, Ha! Ha! Ha! you can’t touch us or do anything about it. Here is my take on the situation and the quotations I use are going to be directly from a transcript of the 60 Minutes story, unless otherwise stated.

“Washington D.C. is a town that runs on inside information—but should our elected officials be able to use that information to pad their own pockets? As Steve Kroft reports, members of Congress and their aides have regular access to powerful political intelligence, and many have made well-timed stock market trades in the very industries they regulate. For now, the practice is perfectly legal, but some say it’s time for the law to change.”  The key word to note here is “regulate.” If you watch FOX News and most of the other corporate-controlled media, you hear the highly-paid pundits railing against the evils of regulation. What a joke! Regulations, if enforced at all, have rarely been a hindrance to the corrupt business practices that are standard practice. The dancing clowns or court jesters on FOX News are there to distract us by pretending to be upset at the unfairness leveled at simple, honest businessmen in America. Yeah right, that’s why as we, the citizen chumps circle the drain, the Robber Barons grow richer by the minute. Ever since Ronald Reagan, that darling of the super rich, was president, they have been claiming that deregulation was the only thing necessary for American business to prosper and therefore, for the rest of us to prosper. Well I say that only those who are willfully blind can possibly believe this still. Reagan’s deregulation allowed the Savings & Loan Scandal to happen and which cost us, the taxpayers, billions of dollars. And Reagan, along with the help of President Clinton’s repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, which was established after the first Great Depression, to stop banks from investing in risky ventures with the pubic’s money, brought us the current recession but I say bullshit, we’re in another depression and won’t see light for a long time to come, if at all? Let’s return to the 60 Minutes story.

“The next national election is now less than a year away and congressmen and senators are expending much of their time and their energy raising the millions of dollars in campaign funds they’ll need just to hold onto a job that pays $174,000 a year.”

I don’t know about you but I sure wouldn’t mind making a measly $174,000 a year and that would be enough to motivate me to do an honest job while there. But then, I have never been what most people call ambitious. By the way, these poverty-stricken politicians get a few perks besides this paltry salary. I just did a little research and this was from an article written in 1992 so I’m sure the prices are way off but they will illustrate my point i.e. if you or I need heart surgery, it’ll cost us about $40,000 but if you’re a congressman, it’ll cost you about $70 a day and you’ll be in one of the best hospitals with top-notch treatment and accomodations. Politicians after serving only five years in office, get the best medical coverage for the rest of their lives & pay next to nothing for it. Gee? But they don’t want us to have universal health care or the single payer option? They also get their salaries for the rest of their lives even if they only served one term in office. Not a bad gig huh? They get immunity from prosecution for most crimes. Wish I had that too. Through the “franking privilege” they get millions of tax-free dollars to use to create a positive public image. Let’s see, so they don’t have to worry about being caught for their various crimes because they usually get immunity and then they get millions of dollars we pay for in our taxes, to put a positive spin on their immoral behavior? Remember my friends, this is the proud land of “law & order,” and we have great respect for the law. Oh yeah, and what about all the concern from those pompous asses on FOX News & Friends about the benefits that are lavished on union members and how they are causing the downfall of America?

I’m sure you’ve all seen or heard about those infamous tears of our current speaker of the house, John Boehner, well I say they are crocodile tears because that sniveling, two-faced liar cares nothing about the American public and does everything he can to stop any legislation that might actually help us. Here’s what Steve Kroft reported about his question to Speaker Boehner:

“During the healthcare debate of 2009, members of Congress were trading health care stocks, including House Minority Leader John Boehner, who led the opposition against the so-called public option, government funded insurance that would compete with private companies. Just days before the provision was finally killed off, Boehner bought health insurance stocks, all of which went up. Now speaker of the House, Congressman Boehner also declined to be interviewed, so we tracked him down at his weekly press conference. Kroft: You made a number of trades going back to the health care debate. You bought some insurance stock. Did you make those trades based on non-public information? John Boehner: I have not made any decisions on day-to-day trading activities in my account. And haven’t for years. I don’t–I do not do it, haven’t done it and wouldn’t do it. Later Boehner’s spokesman told us that the health care trades were made by the speaker’s financial adviser, who he only consults with about once a year.”

Yeah, right! And if you buy that, I have some swamp land in Florida that I’ll sell you. He’s either the world’s stupidest investor or a blatant liar. Like he’s not going to pick up the phone and share insider information with his financial adviser and tell him to sell or buy this or that stock? And lest you think this is just a hatchet-job on my part because I clearly detest the Republican party, the Democrats are equally culpable and I have very little respect for them as well.
