Charter Corporations, Not Charter Schools!

Charter Corporations, Not Charter Schools!

Has Obama completely lost his mind? At a time when Americans are screaming “I’m as mad as Hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!” in protests and sit-ins around the country under the umbrella of Occupy Wall St., Obama taps G.E.’s CEO, Jeff Immelt, to be his Jobs Czar? I guess I shouldn’t be surprised though when I recall that he appointed the wolves Geitner, Summers, & Bernanke to guard the economic hen-house?

This is just another example of how corrupt our government has become and how the corporate cockroaches are running amok. I heard on Democracy Now! last week that Chase/Morgan gave the New York City Police Dept. $4.6 million dollars. Hmm? I can’t help but wonder about the timing? Americans getting fed-up with losing their jobs, their homes, their health insurance, their self-respect are standing up on their hind legs and it’s beginning to worry the robber barons. Isn’t it interesting to note though that after Sept. 11, 2001 and so many of New York’s firemen, police, EMTs, etc. got sick, these same titans of finance had no compassion or cash for the police, firemen, & EMTs?

Let me share with you a few interesting facts about G.E. and Morgan/Chase. G.E. used to run an ad called “G.E. Brings Good Things to Light,” and yeah, if you think that nuclear power is a good thing, that would be true. I wonder how the people living around Japan’s nuclear power plants that melted down feel about nuclear power? Or what about those who lived near Chernobyl? And don’t forget our very own Three Mile Island. By the way, Ronnie Reagan, that darling of the far right, honed his public speaking skills by being a spokesman for G.E. for 20 years. Reagan dubbed it “The Speech,” and traveled America giving the same speech i.e. the commies are coming, the commies are coming! This is corporate fear mongering plain and simple. Keep the public afraid and they won’t interrupt the flow of tax dollars into G.E. and the other corporate crooks’ pockets. And to further reflect their loyalty to America for all she has given them, in 2010, G.E. made profits of $14.2 billion worldwide, with $5.1 billion coming from U.S. operations. Yet they paid no U.S. taxes and claimed a tax benefit of $3.2 billion http://www.marketwatch.com/story/ge-tax-bill-imbroglio-wont-go-away-2011-04-13

As for J.P. Morgan, the largest and most powerful bank in America currently, did you know that during the Civil War, J.P. Morgan bought defective rifles for $3 apiece and sold them to the federal government for $17 apiece? (The Underground History of American Education by John Taylor Gatto) Yep, the business of America is business or should I say, giving the people the business? The current CEO of J.P. Morgan, Jamie Dimon, was being considered for the position of Secretary of the Treasury by Obama but said some unpleasant things that may have ticked Obama off? But here’s a glimpse of Dimon’s perspective or concern regarding his fellow Americans:

In the same vein, JPMorgan Chase Chief Executive Jamie Dimon has spoken out against an Obama proposal to levy a special tax on banks to recoup bailout costs. “Using tax policy to punish people is a bad idea,” said Dimon. “All businesses tend to pass costs on to customers.”

In a nutshell my friend, corporate America want us as dumb as possible and this is why they are behind things like the push for charter schools. Charter schools aren’t regulated by the government and that means the owners aren’t held accountable contrary to the public relations propaganda campaign they’ve been waging. The corporate pirates are out to privatize everything they can so it’s that much easier for them to steal it. The book I mentioned above by John Taylor Gatto is quite an eye-opener but I have a sneaking suspicion that Gatto may be a closet Christian fundamentalist? Nonetheless, it is definitely worth a close read. Another great book which offers many amazing insights into the American psyche and perhaps helps to explain why the likes of Michelle Bachman, Rick Perry, Sarah Palin, etc. ad nauseam are offered up as viable presidential candidates is Anti-Intellectualism in American Life by Richard Hofstadter. I realize that it is probably extremely naïve of me but the idealist in me dreams of a day when we can take away the legal rights/status of corporations and return to the time around the founding of America when corporations were kept on a very short leash via charters that specifically laid-out what they could and couldn’t do. I strongly urge anyone who may read this to check out the documentary film The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power based on the book by Joel Bakan, and if you’d like to know more about what we can do to curtail the abuses of corporations, Paul Cienfuegos has written many good articles on the subject and been actively involved in the good fight for a number of years. Of course the moronic & selfish ones who listen to Limbaugh, Beck, O’Reilly, etc. dismiss the brave souls fighting back against the insanity & greed of Wall St. but lately I have heard some “progressives” or “liberals,” criticize the people participating in Occupy Wall St. for not having a “clear & concise message.” Well, how about Charter Corporations, Not Charter Schools!
