Ignorance is Bliss for the 1% Who Rule America

The war on our public educational system as evidenced by the right-wing extremists agenda of shutting-down public schools and replacing them with charter schools. And the most ludicrous claim these modern day robber barons make is that they are making schools & teachers more accountable. Their hidden agenda is to create a nation of schools totally unaccountable to the public and under the complete control of corporations. As Noam Chomsky has noted, corporations are de facto private tyrannies where your rights as a citizen of a democracy are null & void. For an excellent, detailed description of the privatization of everything from water to public education, check out Naomi Klein’s The Shock Doctrine.

Case in point, Naomi Klein showed how the plunderers swooped in after Hurricane Katrina and gutted the public sector in New Orleans i.e. replaced former black neighborhoods with expensive housing complexes etc. so that only the wealthy could afford to live there. They shut down the New Orleans public school system and replaced it with charter schools. The craven cockroaches even boasted “God did what we couldn’t do” (got rid of the black residents) Of course God had a little assistance thanks to the gross & willful negligence of the levee system protecting New Orleans. Moreover, I just learned yesterday that the illegal president of Honduras who was assisted in his coup d’etat by America, went to New Orleans to meet with the leaders of their charter schools because he wants to force charter schools on Honduras.

The ideal in terms of public education as far as the corporate vultures is concerned, is to create a generation of fascist fundamentalists indoctrinated into the corporate state ideology. And fascist is the appropriate label for these vermin because I use it in the sense that Mussolini, Italy’s fascist leader during WWII, is said to have meant it i.e. “fascism should more appropriately called corporatism because it is a wedding of the state and corporate power.” All those Americans who fought against the Nazis and the fascists in WWII must be rolling over in their graves at this tragic turning of America into the complete opposite of the democracy they sacrificed for.

Following this further, public education is a primary target of the power elite because not only does it give them more control in terms of shaping the minds of future generations but it also breaks the backs of teachers’ unions. Karl Rove, one of the most fiendish minds & callous spirits to ever walk upright, has publicly stated that the more unions they can smash, the less money the democrats will have and eventually the republicans will rule permanently. And another one of their malevolent and malicious propagandists, Grover Norquist, has made clear that his goal is to shrink government down to the size of a baby that can be drowned in a bathtub. In brief, their game plan is to wreck the economy and frame the democrats for it. By allowing corporations tax havens and awarding them subsidies and by passing on all the costs of their corporate greed e.g. the Super Banks “too big to fail,” who brought the world near the brink of total financial collapse, they are bankrupting the states and have the false justification to cut every social welfare program they can get their hands on.

Professor Chomsky has also pointed out that the two major expenses for America are health care and the “defense industry.” Of course we saw how far health care reform got. Obama immediately caved-in to the rich and got rid of the public option so things have not only not improved but now we are forced to become clients of the health insurance industry. And there’s never been a “defense” program the status quo hasn’t liked because the money is transferred from the public treasury i.e. our taxes, to the pockets of the rich. Moreover, the rapacious reptiles know that the more they steal from us and drive us to acts of despair and desperation, the more they will need weapons and police, military might, & private security i.e. mercenaries.
I know this is all very depressing but what the hell, I basically write for myself because hardly anybody I know will even take the time to read a paragraph or two because they are all caught in the rat trap maze and too confused & tired to make any sense of it all. My ex-wife is just about the only person who will take the time to read my essays and she’s often too exhausted to comment much on them because she’s a public school teacher who teaches special education classes and they are more overworked than anyone in the public school system. To some extent, I agree with the critics who point out the many flaws in our public school system but this attack by the far right nut jobs is totally fraudulent because they don’t really care about improving education but rather, they seek to totally destroy any semblance of a quality education.

I have been to Europe several times and it’s often been embarrassing because America is pretty much the laughing stock of the so-called “developed nations,” when it comes to our public education. In fact, I met a guy from Switzerland many years ago and he knew far more about American history, literature, politics, philosophy, etc. than I did. I started picking his brain and from the books & authors he recommended, my true awakening began. By the way, speaking of intellectual inspiration, one of the top five teachers I’ve ever known, Mr. Garrot at California State University at Long Beach, told me to check out Doris Lessing and said she was his favorite living author. So I did and I came across this passage from one of her books which sums up our public educational system very well in my opinion:

“It may be that there is no other way of educating people. Possibly, but I don’t believe it. In the meantime it would be a help at least to describe things properly, to call things by their right names. Ideally, what should be said to every child, repeatedly, throughout his or her school life is something like this: ‘You are in the process of being indoctrinated. We have not yet evolved a system of education that is not a system of indoctrination. We are sorry, but it is the best we can do. What you are being taught here is an amalgam of current prejudice and the choices of this particular culture. The slightest look at history will show how impermanent these must be. You are being taught by people who have been able to accommodate themselves to a regime of thought laid down by their predecessors. It is a self-perpetuating system. Those of you who are more robust and individual than others, will be encouraged to leave and find ways of educating yourself—educating your own judgment. Those that stay must remember, always and all the time, that they are being moulded and patterned to fit into the narrow and particular needs of this particular society.’”
(The Golden Notebooks, Doris Lessing)

However, we are rarely told this simple truth regarding public education and those trying to completely destroy public education as it now exists wish to be even more dishonest and deceitful than what we already have. There are great public school teachers but they are far and few in between. And I truly fear the kind of teachers the charter school movement are installing in their schools. The fascists masquerading as free market fundamentalists want nothing less than a nation of Stepford Wives & Olie Norths. Moreover, there is no free market, this is the grand charade but insightful and incisive scholars like Noam Chomsky have revealed that in fact what we have is socialism for the rich. In brief, the rich are given subsidies, tax breaks, and the lucrative government contracts and are guaranteed and protected against losses due to their incompetence as businessmen. All the rest of us must deal with their so-called free market aka the law of the jungle. We’re not supposed to notice that we never stand a chance because the deck is stacked against us and the big boys can and do smash us whenever they please e.g. Wal Mart is given huge tax breaks, won’t allow unions, shows their employees how to apply for food stamps, pays minimum wage, discriminates against women, forces small stores out of business, and is touted as the great example of free market capitalism in America.

On the other hand, we have the corporate owned and controlled mass media and Fox News is a prime example of corporate propaganda at its worst i.e. most effective. Fox News should more rightly be dubbed America’s Pravda, the former Russian newspaper that spread the Communist propaganda. It’s absolutely mindboggling that so many people get their news or information from Fox and actually believe their garbage. Just tune in to Limbaugh, Beck, or O’Reilly for one of their shows and if you can refrain from vomiting, you’ll see one long parade of prejudice, stereotyping, and hate & fear mongering so blatant that only the truly ignorant or willfully blind can fail to note it. The fascists in control here in America must truly believe we are a nation of morons and that if they keep us ignorant via corporate media and charter schools, along with an ever growing police state that we’ll continue to fight in their imperial wars of aggression and settle for the crumbs that fall from their tables of bountiful feasts.

We are being robbed of our dignity and our humanity and we plod along, dumbfounded with blank stares and hollow faces that reflect our waning spirits. In conclusion I would remind you of George Orwell’s warning; “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.” Think of this my friend, most of the textbooks published for use in our public schools are censored by a handful of conservative Christians from Texas, therefore they are controlling the past because they shape the history that our children are taught. And who controls the present? A handful of corporate media conglomerates control the present because they own the overwhelming majority of media and determine what the public will see, hear, and read. Welcome to America, land of the free!
